The following are frequently asked question about the Save the Lake campaign, and the proposed dredging.  We hope the answers given will help!

How much will it cost to dredge the entire lake? That cannot be determined until the entire lake has been engineered, and permits have been obtained for the entire lake; however it is estimated to be several million dollars.  Additional engineering is cost prohibitive at this time.  Additionally, engineering plans and permits are only good for 5 years , which is not sufficient time to complete a dredge of the entire lake.  Thus the additional money spent on engineering would be wasted.

How can money be raised by doing the lake in stages? Soil from each phase will be sold as fill.

How does the Board intend to repay the loan? The “worst case scenario” will require members to pay approximately $100/yr. in addition to dues for the life of the loan. Another possible solution is to assess residents $350/yr. in addition to dues for five years to repay the loan, and raise money for further lake remediation.

What happens if the loan is defaulted on? Byram Twp. Is the cosigner of the loan, therefore they would be responsible for the repayment of the loan.

When will the dredging be done? The anticipated date for dredging to begin is November, 2008

How long will the lake be lowered when the dredging takes place? Dredging is expected to be completed within 2-3 months.

Can DEP declare portions of the lake wetlands prior to dredging? If so, what happens then? Areas can be declared Wetlands, at which point they will not be able to be dredged.

Will it be dredging or hydro raking? Mechanical dredging.

What benefit to the whole lake will be seen if the back part of the lake is dredged? Removing weeds from the inlet area of the lake will improve water flow and turnover rate. Additionally, money can be saved on chemical treatment for that part of the lake, and can be used instead on the main lake.

What can be done about the road drainage? All road drains surrounding the lake are the property of the Town or the County. LLIC is working with Byram Township government to improve the drains.

What can be done about septic runoff into the lake? All lake communities in Byram are required to follow the septic management plan set forth by the Town.

While the lake is lowered, can homeowners remove sediment/weeds from behind their homes? Homeowners are encouraged to contact the NJDEP for specific information regarding allowed activities; however, it seems that manual removal of sediment and weeds is allowed.

Engineering services have been retained by Medina Associates. As engineering progresses, and a more specific scope of services emerges, a follow-up meeting will be planned. Additionally, information will continue to be posted at on this website.
